Playa Negra is a very popular surfer beach in the northwestern region of Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Famous because the movie Endless Summer II being filmed here, this dark sand beach lies a bit further south of the lovely Playa Avellanas and the surf at Playa Negra is a reef making it ideal for the novice as well as the expert surfer. For bathing there is a stretch of protected beach some 100 m south of the famous break. The surf of Playa Negra is very consistent and the right-hand barrels attract the pros among the surfers.
The surf break at Playa Negra is a hollow right break reef that can get quite crowded. However, if you manage to catch a good swell, it is definitely worth it to surf here. Because this beach is very difficult for visitors to get to on their own, booking a surf tour through Kelly's Surf Shop or Surf Camp can make this excursion a highlight of any surfer's vacation.
